Genetics

The Genetics Department at Kaiser Permanente Northwest provides services for the entire life spectrum. Patients can self-refer to our department or be referred by another provider. We work closely with perinatologists to manage high-risk pregnancies and provide prenatal diagnosis and counseling. We evaluate babies and children with birth defects, genetic syndromes, developmental delay, and autism, then recommend specific tests, give advice on medical care, and provide recurrence risk counseling for future pregnancies. Our biggest population of patients is made up of adults with a personal and/or family history of cancer. The availability of cancer genes tests can help identify deleterious (harmful) mutations, allowing other at-risk relatives to be tested. We also evaluate adults with neurodegenerative conditions, such as Huntington disease and familial early onset Alzheimer disease. We have a staff of two Board Certified Clinical Geneticists (MDs) and seven Genetic Counselors (GCs) to serve you.

Clinical services we provide include:

  • Pre-pregnancy planning
  • Counseling on in-vitro fertilization (IVF) and preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) for known familial mutations/chromosome abnormalities
  • Prenatal screening, testing, and counseling
  • Syndrome identification
  • Recurrence risk counseling
  • Guidance in joining clinical trials
  • Recommendations for medical management
  • Counseling for cancer screening/surveillance and risk-reducing surgeries
