My family moved to Oregon before I started primary school. I was raised locally in the Portland metropolitan area. I attended the University of Oregon as an undergraduate and then for graduate school. I am a graduate of the Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) medical school and I completed my residency training in psychiatry also at OHSU. I also completed a residency in aerospace medicine and a Master's of Public Health (MPH) at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas. I am a former United States Army trained flight surgeon and I have worked for NASA at the Johnson Space Center. I have always enjoyed practicing medicine in unique and challenging environments. I believe the Pacific Northwest is a great place for families to live and grow.
About my practice
I have a very diverse training background having studied biology, psychiatry, public health and neurosciences. I see clinical medicine as a way to apply medical discoveries to humanity. I strongly support Kaiser Permanente's team approach to health care and believe this is the best way to provide optimal care to my patients. I enjoy working closely with my primary care colleagues in helping patients recover from mental health conditions. I believe the best way to treat psychiatric illness is to formulate a treatment plan that takes into consideration each person's unique qualities and goals. I work closely with our therapists and believe that the best treatment is a blended approach that includes medication when indicated, psychotherapy and wellness activities.
How I thrive
I am an avid outdoor enthusiast and sportsman. My family enjoys snow shoeing and cross country skiing in the winter and mountain biking in the summer. For exercise I enjoy long distance running and cross fit training. For adrenaline I enjoy sport bike riding and flying small aircraft. Downtime is also very important in my personal life. Our family enjoys family meals, movie nights and weekend trips away from town. Faith is also an important component in my spiritual health. I thrive best by having a balance and touch much of life lightly.

Dr. Ashley is very compassionate. Appreciated that he knew me as a person and listened to me. He helped me find a solution that no one else has helped me to find in the last 7 - 8 years. Daily medication is hard for me to take. He prescribed me medications I can take as I need them.
