My dad has a been a Kaiser Permanente doctor for 38 years, so I grew up as a "Kaiser kid" right here in Portland, Oregon. I became interested in the Genetics when my high school biology teacher gave us a great two-week session on the subject - I was hooked! I decided then and there to be become a clinical geneticist, and I've never looked back! I majored in biology at UCSD and earned my MD at George Washington University School of Medicine in D.C. I completed my Internal Medicine residency at the University of Colorado in Denver, then did a 3-year fellowship in Medical Genetics at UCSF. I returned to Portland in 2002 to take my dream job at Kaiser Permanente, and I can honestly say that I love what I do every day!
About my practice
Genetics is a great field because I get to see patients in every age group. The daily variety makes this job extremely interesting. Some of the common conditions I see in my practice include fetal anomalies, birth defects, chromosomal syndromes, single gene syndromes, developmental delay, autism, hereditary cancer, and hereditary neurodegenerative disorders. I try to provide excellent patient care by listening to my patients, counseling them along with our excellent genetic counselors, creating a plan for follow-up, and providing helpful handouts. I sincerely care about my patients, and I enjoy seeing them for follow-up visits so I can learn what's new in their lives.
How I thrive
When I'm not at work, I really enjoy working out. My favorites are Turbo kickbox class and Step class. I also love going to Trail Blazer games, comedy shows, live theater, and movies, and I really love reading good mysteries. My energetic husband is an engineer, doggie day care owner, and track coach who plays volleyball, basketball, and tennis in his spare time. We're having a lot of fun as new parents to our baby girl. Our passions include world travel (my husband has been to 44 countries!), trying new food, and spending time with our family and friends.
