I grew up in Indiana and was strongly influenced by my father who was an engineer and a scoutmaster. I was active in the Boy Scouts and science fairs for several years. This left me with an appreciation of the environment, problem solving and working with my hands. I have always felt doctors are in a unique position to positively influence patients by example and have prioritized personal fitness since college. I played college level volleyball and currently enjoy Master's swimming and road biking (always with lights and a helmet!). In 1996 my wife, two sons, and I moved to Oregon where the hiking and windsurfing were a big attraction. I also enjoy solo guitar and chess.
About my practice
I believe specialization and collaboration in the practice of medicine and surgery is beneficial to patient care. My primary focus is the diagnosis and treatment of surgical illnesses of the abdomen, breast, varicose veins and skin disorders. One thing I enjoy about Kaiser Permanente is the willingness and ready opportunity for consultation with other surgeons and health care professionals. As a result of my additional fellowship training in surgical critical care and trauma I am an instructor in advanced trauma life support and the surgical member of the hospital Sepsis Committee. Whenever I talk to patients I like to utilize visual aids in patient education and communication, such as diagrams, handouts, and photographs.
How I thrive
Since my wife and I were married in 1984, I have always made family my number one priority. I feel that none of us in later years will feel we spent too much time with our family. My wife and I have coached our two boys and their chess teams during grade school, and had the privilege of watching our children perform in their respective Wind Ensembles and Orchestras in Europe and China. A favorite family summer vacation for seven years was travelling to the Cazadero Family Music Camp in the redwoods of Sonoma County, California. My family also enjoys bicycling, camping, and hiking here in Oregon. With both our children seriously studying film and film production, our family enjoys a night or matinee at the movies at every opportunity (on those rare rainy Northwest nights!).
