*Dr. Desch and her medical assistant, [name] I believe, are both wonderful. In my year of seeing *Dr. Desch I have felt understood and cared for. I am very grateful to her for all the help she gave me. I've never felt this confident in a mental health services provider.

I felt more like *Dr. Desch wanted to prescribe my anxiety/depression rather than talk to me about underlying causes/ways to deal w/stress.

*Dr. Desch has been so helpful in my recent diagnosis and treatment process. She listens and explains things and encourages me to be proactive in my treatment. Each visit I've had with her has left me feeling in control of my condition and supported as I work through understanding it.

Growing up in central Nebraska it was natural for me to complete my college studies in Lincoln, NE and medical school at the University Medical Center in Omaha, NE. Although I entered medical school with the intention of pursuing Family Medicine, I was drawn to the study of Psychiatry during my first inpatient psychiatry at the Omaha Veteran's Hospital. I completed my general adult training with a fellowship in Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry at University of Minnesota. Early in private practice, I was impressed with the frequency of substance use conditions accompanying psychiatric disease. I subsequently focused study on addictive disorders, and have Board Certifications in Addiction Psychiatry, with General Adult Psychiatry. I later moved from Minneapolis to Phoenix, where I met my spouse. After a number of years in the sun, we planned our move to Portland, where I sought to join the Northwest Permanente group. We are glad we did.

About my practice

I practice general adult psychiatry and have worked in a variety of practice settings over the years. Most recently, I have enjoyed outpatient clinic work. My continuing areas of interest are the addictive disorders, psychiatric illness in the context of other medical conditions and general psychiatry. In my approach to patient care, I value active listening to understand each person's strengths and interests. I encourage patient participation in the overall treatment plan. Building on patients' strengths and interests often strengthens the therapeutic relationship. Medication management is often necessary in outpatient psychiatric care. Finding medicines that work at the minimally effective amount is what most people desire. As a member of the psychiatric department within the Kaiser Permanente system, I value the integration of medical specialties within one electronic record. This facilitates communication and coordination of care between specialties for the best health of the patient.

How I thrive

As a new resident of Portland, I'm currently thriving by connecting with wonderful neighbors, and growing friendships. Regular time outside with my spouse, travelling, walking the dog, or working on the house keeps me in awe of the beautiful country here. I'm also interested in reading, theatre, music, art, exercise, and sports.
